Classic Irish Coffee

Well, well, well if it isn’t our old friend the classic Irish coffee.  And yes folks when I say classic Irish coffee, I mean CLASSIC.

There’s not going to be any baileys used today.  Nor will you see any large poofy mounds of whipped cream covered in chocolate shavings.  No folks, today we are going to be making the original Irish coffee recipe, not that second-hand bull you might be accustomed to.

I’m sorry for getting so defensive about this, but in my opinion, the real Irish coffee recipe is just a better balance cocktail.  Not too sweet like you find in most renditions.

To make it we start off by mixing hot coffee, brown sugar, and Irish whiskey in a mug.  Then we top it off with a layer of fresh cream that has been ever so lightly whipped that it is airy, but still a liquid.

Now you don’t mix the cream into the coffee, that’s a major faux pas.  Instead, you are supposed to sip the coffee cocktail through the cream, getting a perfect combination of both.  I know that might sound odd, possibly even stupid. But trust me if you’ve never had it this way then you’re missing out.

So if you’re ready, let’s get to it.

Tips, Tricks, & Suggestions

  • If you are using a glass mug then run it under some hot water for 30 seconds so that it doesn’t crack.
  • The mug I am using today holds 10 fluid oz.
  • I’ve found that this drink is best when you use a medium roast coffee.  However, if you prefer a darker roast then feel free to substitute.
  • This cocktail goes great with our Raspberry Scones

Classic Irish Coffee Recipe

Total time: 5 Minutes

Servings: the measurements are for one drink

Ingredients

¾ Cup of a medium-roast coffee, freshly brewed

3 Tablespoons of Irish whiskey

1 Tablespoon brown sugar

Heavy cream

Optional:

Freshly grated nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Brew up coffee with your preferred method.

  1. Whip up the cream: While the coffee is brewing lightly whip up some of the heavy cream with a whisk for a couple of minutes.  We don’t want it to be fully whipped, just slightly thicker than unwhipped cream.

  1. Assemble the drink:  Start by pouring the ¾ cup of the coffee into a mug.  Then add the whiskey and the brown sugar. Stir this for 30 seconds until the sugar has dissolved into the liquid.  Finally carefully spoon some of the lightly whipped cream on top, until the mug is filled.

Optional:  Grate some of the nutmeg over the top.

  1. Serve & enjoy your Irish coffee responsibly.
