Mango Salsa

Mango salsa always reminds me of a particular episode from the show Futurama.  It’s the episode where Bender (one of the main characters) is challenged by Elzar (an alien version of Emerald Legasis) to an Ironchef cook competition.  And in order to beat Elzar, Bender enlists the help of his old mentor.  It is during this training that the old man informs Bender that Elzar has succumbed to the “dark side” of cooking, stating.

Now of course this is all just a silly joke from a cartoon, but I feel like it really speaks to how mango salsa was viewed at the time.  As something that is overly flashy, or lacking authenticity.  And in a way, these are feeling that many, including myself, still subconsciously have.

But now that the mango salsa fad has come and gone, I feel like we can reanalyze the condiment without any of our previous notions.  And all I have to say is mango salsas frickin awesome.  In fact, it’s always been awesome.  It’s sweet, it’s fresh, and it goes perfectly with just about any type of grilled fish.  So without further to say let’s get to making our mango salsa.

Tips, Tricks & Suggestions

  • If you’ve always had trouble cutting up your mangos then I suggest you check out our quick lesson on how to cut up a mango.
  • I feel that it is best to make this salsa at least a couple of hours before you plan on using it, as the flavors will really come together.  Also, don’t worry if you have any leftover mango salsa as it will keep in your fridge for at least 4 days.
  • If you’re not a big fan of mangos then try swapping them out with other types of fruit.  Some of my favorites are pineapples and kiwis.
  • Some of our favorite dishes to serve this mango salsa with are our cedar plank cajun salmon, pan-fried trout, or honey-chipotle shrimp.
