Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is one of those quintessential side dishes people have during the holiday season.  When done right, it is the perfect balance of sweet and sour. Plus since it’s chock full of antioxidants, that means you don’t have to feel guilty after eating it.  However, one thing that I never quite understood was the prevalence of canned cranberry sauce. Now, of course, I’m a little bit biased coming from a family that likes to cook but trust me when I say that making cranberry sauce from scratch is quite possibly the easiest thing ever.

Essentially all you have to do is mix some sugar and water and let the cranberries simmer in that mixture for about 10 minutes. That’s it! I repeat THAT IS IT! Take that with the fact that cranberry sauce can be made days ahead of time, and I just don’t understand what people think they are saving themselves from.  That’s why today I would like to share with you folks, my mom’s recipe for basic cranberry sauce.

Now as I just said this is the most basic of cranberry sauce recipes, mainly because most of my family prefers it as simple as possible.  However, like many of the recipes that I share with you folks, this one can easily be customized for a more unique feel. For example, you could add spices such as cinnamon or cloves, or you could add ingredients like lemon and orange zest for a more sour and complex taste.  All of this is totally up to you, however, I do recommend that you at least try out the basic version first before you decide to experiment. Either way, if you are a fan of cranberry sauce, then I guarantee you are going to love this!

Simple Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Prep time: 1 minute

Cook time: 15 minutes

Servings: About 6 cups

Ingredients

4 Cups of fresh cranberries

1 Cup of white granulated sugar

1 Cup of water

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup:  Add both the sugar and the water to a medium-sized pot.  Then place this pot on your stove, over high heat. Let this mixture come to a low boil, and stir the ingredients until the sugar dilutes into the water (this should only take a couple of minutes).

  1. Add the cranberries:  Once the simple syrup has been made, quickly toss in the cranberries.  Then stir the cranberries into the simple syrup, and let everything come back to a boil.  Once it has come to a boil, lower the heat and let it all simmer for about 10 minutes, or until most of the cranberries have burst.

  1. Let sit: After the above step has been completed, take the pot off of the stove, and let it cool down for about 10 to 20 minutes.  Once it has done that, then you can pour the sauce into a container, and let it chill in your fridge overnight.

  1. Serve & enjoy
