Chocolate covered strawberries are a quintessential Valentine day treat.  In fact, it’s safe to say that they are pretty much a cliche. But I’m not about to feel embarrassed about making them, because they are the best damn tasting cliches I’ve ever had. Â
However, what I would be embarrassed about is purchasing premade chocolate covered strawberries for my significant other.
Why?
Um, one they’re super easy to make, and two, they’re a hell of a lot cheaper.
Honestly, the process is as simple as melting chocolate, dipping strawberries in said chocolate, and then letting the chocolate cool off and harden in your fridge.  It’s not exactly rocket science here folks!
And the price difference, I mean good lord it’s highway robbery.  If you don’t believe me, then just do a quick glance at any of the websites of companies that deliver chocolate covered strawberries.  They are all 20 to 30 bucks for like a half dozen, that’s pure insanity I tell ya! Meanwhile, I calculated how much it cost me to make them myself and it ended up being a grand total of $7.00 for 30.
So if that doesn’t peer pressure you into making them yourself, then I don’t know what will. Â
Tips, Tricks, & Suggestions
- It is best to make these the day of, as they tend to release an ooze if left in the fridge for multiple days. Â It will still be edible, just look less appetizing.
- While you can use a double boiler to melt the chocolate, after many years of making these I have found that it is completely unnecessary. Â Just follow my instructions and melt the chocolate in your microwave, not only is it easier, it results in the exact same quality of melted chocolate.
- You can easily add sprinkles by simply dipping the freshly coated strawberries in some.
Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe
Prep time: 2 minutes
Cook time: 2 minutes
Rest time: 1 to 2 hours
Servings: 15 strawberries
Ingredients
For every 15 strawberries you will need:
8 Ounces, or 1 cup of either semisweet, dark, or white chocolate morsels (I recommend Nestle or Ghirardelli brand)
1 Teaspoon of vegetable oil
Instructions
- Wash & dry the strawberries: Make sure to not only wash the strawberries but also make sure that they are completely dry. Â Any residual water on the strawberries can cause the chocolate to not properly adhere.
- Get out a cookie/baking sheet and place a sheet of wax paper over it.
- Melt the chocolate: Add the chocolate and the oil to a deep microwavable bowl and stir it up so the oil coats the chocolate. Place this in your microwave and let the microwave run for 30 seconds. Â Then take it out and give it a stir with a spoon. Repeat this process a couple of times, or until the chocolate is smooth and completely melted when you stir it.
- Dip the strawberries: Hold the strawberries by their leaves and dunk them one by one into the melted chocolate. Â Let the excess drip off. Then place each strawberry on the baking sheet.
Optional drizzle: After you have done step 4 with all of the strawberries, melt a different type of melted chocolate and place it into a small plastic bag.  Then use scissors to cut a small hole on one tip. Finally, just squeeze the bag so that that chocolate drizzles out and over the strawberries.
- Let them cool in the fridge for about an hour or two.
- Serve & enjoy
