Cajun Seasoning

Spices are one of the easiest ways to add flavor to any dish.  But knowing which spices go well with each other can often be difficult for new cooks.  Luckily there is a simple solution to that entire issue, spice blends.  They’re basic combinations of spices that are known to work well together that you can bust out and sprinkle on any dish you need.  In fact, even experienced cooks use spice blends all the time, they are that convenient.  And today we’re going to show you how to make one of our favorite spice blends, Cajun seasoning.

What is Cajun Seasoning?

As you might have guessed “cajun seasoning” is a staple of Cajun cuisine found in Louisiana.  It can be found in a number of different cajun dishes from gumbo to jambalaya.  However, everyone tends to have their own recipe, so it can vary from cook to cook.  That being said there are a number of common ingredients that can be found in most cajun seasonings.

  • Paprika, most of the time it’s sweet but I like smoked
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Dried herbs like oregano and thyme
  • Salt

Tips, Tricks & Suggestions

  • Since this seasoning blend is completely made out of dried spices it should last a long time once properly stored.  Your best option is to store the seasoning in an air-tight glass container, but plastic will work as well.  If this is done and the spices & herbs are relatively fresh then the cajun seasoning should last for years.
  • Cajun seasoning is meant to have a bit of a kick but not overly spicy.  That being said it’s your cajun seasoning and you can easily adjust the ingredients to make it spicier.  All you have to do is increase the amounts of cayenne pepper by a teaspoon or two depending on your spice preference.
  • What are the best ways to use this cajun seasoning?  Well of course you could use it in a number of cajun/creole dishes like Etouffee, Gumbo, or Jambalaya.  But it’s also great in untraditional dishes like our cedar plank cajun salmon.  Or used instead of salt and pepper in our baked french fries to make cajun fries.

  1. Thank you for explaining that Cajun seasoning has a kick, but you can make it spicier if you want. We had some authentic Cajun food this last weekend, and now I want to try making some of the food we had ourselves. I’ll have to try this out and see how it works out.
