Blueberry Gin Sorbet

If you were to ask me which dessert I love to make the most, the answer would easily be sorbet.  Not only does it taste great, but more importantly it is incredibly easy to put together.  You basically need three things for sorbet, some frozen fruit, some form of sugar, and a liquid with a low freezing point. The fruit, obviously is the base of the sorbet, providing its body, and flavor.  The sugar oddly enough helps to create the creamy texture of the sorbet.  And the low freezing point liquid, well is simply used to ensure that the sorbet doesn’t form into a solid block for frozen fruit puree.

All are needed, and all serve their purpose. But probably the best part of sorbet is the fact that you don’t need an ice cream machine to make it. Simply use a blender, or a food processor to break down and incorporate the ingredients, and voila, you have sorbet.

Now for today’s sorbet, the fruit will be blueberries, the sugar will be honey, and the nonfreezable liquid is gin.  Thus Blueberry gin sorbet.

Let’s start out with the blueberries, for which you have two options. First, you can buy fresh blueberries and freeze them.  I prefer this method because it gives you better control over the quality of the fruit. However, I am also not against the easier route (which to be honest, I do most of the time), which is to simply buy a bag of already frozen blueberries.  But I’ll leave that decision up to you.

When it comes to sugar, I always use honey in my sorbet recipes. Traditionally you would make a simple syrup, which works just fine but adds another unnecessary step to what should be an easy recipe.  Now as for the use of gin, it’s because I always like to pair the type of alcohol used in my sorbets with the type of fruit, and I have found that gin tends to work well with blueberries. However, if you aren’t a fan of gin, then please feel free to use whatever type of hard alcohol that you prefer.
