Baked Apples

Well, class, it’s finally mid-fall which means we need to start adapting our menu with what’s in season.  There’s going to be less grilling and more baking, and of course plenty of recipes that include root vegetables, winter squash, and apples.  And with that in mind, I thought it would be a great idea to dust off the old recipe book and prepare something that I haven’t made since college, baked apples.

Now if you’ve never heard of baked apples before then let me be the first to tell you that you’re missing out.  Not only is it a great way to use up the season’s apple harvest, but It’s also a wonderful dessert to make when you’re trying to entertain a small crowd.

Why?

Well to put it simply it’s cheap, requires very little time to make, and is so easy to prepare that it’s practically foolproof.  Essentially all you have to do is core out some apples, stuff them with a mixture of sugar, nuts, and spices, and bake them until the apples are soft.  It’s literally that easy. And the best part is that you can prepare and stuff the apples the day before, and then simply place it in the oven when you’re ready.  Who doesn’t love that? So if you’re ready then let’s get to making our delicious baked apples.

Tips, Tricks & Suggestions

  • Today I am going to be using dried cranberries and walnuts for the stuffing, however, you can use any type of dried fruit or nut that you prefer.  Raisins, dried apricots, dried pineapple, hazelnuts, almonds, pecans, it’s literally up to you.
  • Make sure to use baking apples such as Honeycrisp, Gala, Jonagold, ect.
  • As we said up above you can easily prepare the apples the day ahead of time and then bake them the day of.
  • If you really want to take this dish over the top then I suggest you pair it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
