Apple Cider Cocktail (Hot)

Last week we made one of my favorite French dishes, Chicken Normandy.  Which if you haven’t already seen, then I highly suggest you check it out as it is a perfect dish for the fall season.  Anyways for that particular recipe, we required 2 cups of apple cider. However, this created a problem because it’s nearly impossible to find apple cider sold in any amount less than a half gallon.  Now obviously, we weren’t about to toss out the remaining 6 cups of apple cider, so we needed a way to use it up. And what better way to use up excess apple cider than to turn it into some boozy hot apple cider cocktails.

You are going to love this cocktail not only because it perfectly encapsulates the flavors of fall, but also because it’s super easy to make.  All you have to do is simmer some apple cider with some whole spices and a few other ingredients until their flavors infuse with the cider. Then you strain the cider, add some liquor of your choice to it and serve it up.  It’s really that simple! Plus it’s just as easy to make a big batch of this stuff as it is to make a small batch. So if you’re ready to get a little boozy this fall season then let’s get to making our hot apple cider cocktails.

Tips, Tricks & Suggestions

  • Today I am going to be using dark rum to spike our hot cider.  However, the choice of liquor is really up to you and your preference.  Just make sure to use mid-grade liquor, not gut rot.
  • I want to be clear on what type of apple cider we need for this recipe because stores will often sell a number of different products under the name “apple cider”.  Specifically, we need unfiltered apple juice, not apple beer. So go to the juice section of your store, look for apple products, and get the cloudy looking apple juice/cider.
  • Feel free to omit certain spices if you don’t care for them.
  • If you are planning on making a big batch then you can easily perform step 1 in a slow cooker.  Just set it to low and let it steep for an hour or two.
