Refried Beans (Easy) Recipe
Refried beans are a classic Mexican & TexMex side dish that everyone can easily make at home. All you need is some pinto beans (canned, or prepared from dry), that are mashed in a skillet. And then “fried” in some form of fat until thick and creamy!

- 2 15 oz. Cans of pinto beans drained and rinsed
- 2 Tablespoons of lard butter, or oil
- 1 Clove of garlic minced
- 1 Cup of water
- Salt & black pepper to taste
Optional Garnish:
- Shredded Mexican blend cheese or crumbled cojita cheese
Sautee garlic: Melt/heat the lard, butter, or oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and saute it for 30 seconds or until fragrant. Make sure not to burn the garlic.
Heat the beans: Add the drained beans to the pan along with the ½ cup of water. Give everything a good stir and let it come to a simmer. Let this cook for 1 minute so that the beans are heated through.
Mash: Use a potato masher to smash the beans for 30 seconds to a minute or until they are the desired consistency that you prefer.
Reduce: At this point, all you need to do is let the beans simmer and cook for another minute or two so that they reduce and thicken up. Then once they are nice and thick taste some of the beans and add salt and black pepper as needed.
Use the refried beans as a side, in burritos, or however you want to enjoy them!
