I love powdered sugar glaze, but for some reason, I’ve never attempted to make my own. I guess I just assumed that making a powdered sugar glaze involved a long-drawn-out process. Or that it had to include complicated ingredients like egg whites, which I hate separating.
But I was wrong.
Again.
I mean it’s ridiculous just how easy it is to make a powdered sugar glaze. You just put sugar, cream, and vanilla extract in a bowl, mix them together, and viola. I’m calling this powdered sugar glaze “simple” for a reason.
So if you are ready to take your baking game to the next level, then let’s get to making our powdered sugar glaze.
Tips, Tricks, & Suggestions
- If you like a thicker glaze then add less cream, if you like a thinner glaze then add more.
- You can easily make this a fruit-flavored glaze by substituting the cream with any type of fruit juice.
- You can substitute the cream with skim milk for a low-fat option. However, I recommend that you use a tablespoon or two less than if you were to use the cream. This is because the cream is thicker, thus adding 6 tablespoons of skim milk will result in a rather thin glaze.
- Add a few drops of food coloring if you want the glaze to not be white.
Simple Powdered Sugar Glaze Recipe
Prep time: 3 minutes
Servings: a little over 2 cups of glaze
Ingredients
2 Cups of powdered sugar
6 Tablespoons of heavy cream
1 Teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to a medium-sized mixing bowl.
- Use a spoon to mix all of the ingredients together.
Our recommended way to use the glaze: Transfer the glaze to a medium-sized plastic bag. Once you’ve done that squeeze all of the glaze down into one of the bottom corners. Then use some scissors to cut a small hole in this corner, and squeeze the glaze over whatever you want.

Does the glaze harden after a while?
Hi Dora, that’s a very good question! In short, the answer is no. While it will stiffen over time it should remain relatively soft to the touch for up to four days after making it. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you if it remains soft after that amount of time because honestly, it all tends to get eaten up before then. 🙂 So if you’re asking because you don’t want a hardened glaze then don’t worry this is exactly what you are looking for.
However, if you are asking because do you want a truly hardened glaze then, sadly, this isn’t the glaze you are looking for. Instead, you want to make what’s known as royal icing, which regrettably I don’t have a recipe for.
I hope that answers your question.
