I’m excited folks because today we are going to be making something that I haven’t had in a long time, Salisbury steaks. I mean growing up my mother would make Salisbury steak for us at least once a month. It was one of those classic dishes that I fondly look back on as part of my childhood. However, I can’t even recall the last time I’ve eaten the delectable dish, It’s got to be a couple of years by now. But c’est la vie, am I right?
Now for those of you that are unfamiliar with what Salisbury steak is let me be frank. It’s not made out of a real steak! In reality, it consists of ground beef patties mix with a few other ingredients that are smothered and cooked in brown gravy. Of course with the occasional addition of onions and or mushrooms to the gravy.
So who’s all to blame for this false advertisement? Well, it’s none other than it’s inventor Dr. James Henry Salisbury. A 19th-century American physician who created the recipe for his meat-based fad diet. A man who believed that vegetables produced a poisonous substance which could lead to mental illness, tumors, and heart disease. Yes, you read that right! But despite his *cough* “unique” views on dietary health, you got to give the man credit for inventing such a great and iconic recipe.
Tips, Tricks & Suggestions
- If you want to cut down on the fat in this recipe then try subbing out the beef with ground turkey meat.
- A few side dishes that I like to serve this with are our Creamy Mashed Potatoes, Baked Asparagus, and Creamed Leeks.

Once the skillet has heated up place the steak patties in and let them brown up on one side for 3 to 4 minutes. Then flip the steaks over and continue browning them up for another 3 minutes. Take the steaks out, put them on a plate and set them aside for now.
- Cook the onion and mushrooms: Melt the 3 tablespoons of butter in the same pan and toss in the mushrooms and onion. Saute these ingredients for 6 to 8 minutes. Then toss in the 3 tablespoons of flour and continue sauteing for an additional minute.
- Make the gravy: Pour the two cups of beef broth into the skillet and scrape up any brown bits that may be stuck. Then add in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and dijon mustard. Mix this all up until everything is incorporated.
- Finish cooking the steaks: Add the steaks back to the skillet, then cover it and let it braise for 25 to 30 minutes.
