Now that Thanksgiving dinner has come and passed there is a good chance that your fridge is well stocked will all sorts of leftovers. And if you ask me the leftovers are just as important as the meal, if not more so. I make turkey stock for soup out of the leftover turkey carcass. And of course, there are the many turkey pot pies that are made and frozen in order to feast all winter. But when it comes to the day immediately following thanksgiving there is one dish on my mind, a hot turkey sandwich!
Now I must say that there is no recipe for making a hot turkey sandwich, it’s more of a concept. It would be impossible for me to quantify specific amounts for each ingredient. That being said it is a really simple dish to make and you should have no problem figuring out what amounts work best for you. Plus, you really can’t mess it up!
What is a hot turkey sandwich?
As the name suggests it’s served hot, it has turkey, and it’s a sandwich…. Or at least it’s sort of a sandwich. You see the dish is what we’d call an open-faced sandwich which basically means it’s a slice of bread with ingredients piled on top. And while you can definitely try to eat this sandwich with your hands, it’s probably best that you stick with a knife and a fork.
So how is a hot turkey sandwich made?
Well, it starts off by heating up pieces of leftover turkey along with some turkey gravy in a pan. And it is important that you use dry leftover turkey as it will be better suited to soaking up all of that delicious gravy. Then once all of that is heated up you simply pour it over a slice of bread and dig in.
Honestly, it’s that easy!
Tips, Tricks & Suggestions
- The same concept of this dish can be applied to other leftover meats and gravies like chicken, pork, or even beef.
- I find that this dish is best with turkey breast as it tends to be drier and can soak up the gravy. However, if you prefer dark meat, or if that is all you have then feel free to use it instead.
Hot Turkey Sandwich Recipe
Prep time: 2 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1
Ingredients
Leftover sliced turkey meat
Leftover turkey gravy
Sliced bread of your choice
Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Shred the turkey meat: Take a slice or two of turkey meat and use your hands to rip them into smaller pieces. While this step isn’t necessary it will help the turkey meat cook through better.
- Heat the turkey meat and gravy together: Place the shredded turkey meat along with two large scoops of gravy into a small pan. Then place this pan over high heat and stir everything until the gravy begins to bubble. At this point, if there seems to be not enough gravy you can add in an extra scoop or two. Similarly, if there seems to be too much gravy then simply toss in some more shredded turkey. Once the amounts seem right for you just let the turkey and gravy simmer for a minute or two.
- Assemble the sandwich: Place a slice of bread on a plate and then pour the turkey and gravy mixture over top. Then sprinkle on some salt and pepper to taste and dig in!
